Incoming Student Hierarchy of Housing Assignments

When completing your housing preferences, it is important to keep in mind the hierarchy of assignment, meaning some preferences will outweigh others. See below for an explanation of the housing preference hierarchy. Our priority is to maintain roommate groups, given that has been what our Spartans have asked for the most. To do that, you must ensure you fully understand how preferences work.

Graduate Student Housing

Michigan State University's on-campus housing system is primarily home to first- and second-year undergraduate students. Graduate students do have options to live throughout the system, including in Owen Hall or our two on-campus apartment communities, 1855 Place and University Village. 1855 Place also offers options for family housing.

Housing Exceptions

In the fall of 2021, the two-year live-on requirement was reinstated. This means that incoming first-year students must live in on-campus housing for the first four semesters they are enrolled, summer term excluded.

The list below outlines the reasons students may be granted an exception to live off campus. Students who qualify for an exception but want to live on campus do not have to submit an exception. Exceptions are only for required students with a desire to live off campus.

Room Swap Form

Students that created roommate groups of 3 or 4 students may find that they didn’t get placed with their intended roommate, but their intended suitemate instead. There also may be some students interested in changing their assignment to be with a different roommate or to be assigned a different location. To assist with this, we will have a Room Swap Form open in My Housing between Monday, July 28 at 10 a.m. Eastern Time, and Friday, August 8 at 5 p.m. Eastern Time.

Transitional Housing

Each year enrollment shifts and evolves. This sometimes creates a temporary need for overassigned rooms (what we call transitional housing) while we await predicted cancellations to continue through July and August.

Transitional housing is an arrangement in which rooms are converted to house one additional student, typically on a temporary basis. As cancellations come in, transitional rooms are broken down and students are placed in permanent housing assignments as soon as possible.
