The following is Spring 2025 housing information for incoming, transfer and current MSU students.
Spring Incoming Students
As you prepare to begin at Michigan State University this spring semester, we want you to be aware that on-campus housing availability is extremely limited. Due to the size of the fall incoming class, on-campus housing for the spring incoming class is not guaranteed. We have outlined options for spring admitted students below.
Interested in On-Campus Housing
If interested in potentially living on campus for the spring 2025 semester, complete the Spring Housing Request Form in your My Housing account. Interested students should complete the form by Monday, November 18. Important notes:
- Completing the request form does not guarantee housing.
- In the form you will indicate your interest in a double, single or apartment space, and you can share your interest in Gender-Inclusive Housing (GIH) in the comments box. Please note, housing rates are different for single and apartment spaces. We expect most if not all space offers will be in double rooms.
- You will not be able to indicate bathroom preferences or specific roommates. Should space become available, you will be offered that space.
- We will let students know by early December if they will be offered an on-campus space. If you receive a space, move-in information will be shared later in December.
- You will not be required to sign your housing contract unless you are offered a space.
- If you are not offered a space, or are looking to immediately secure your housing, you should explore off-campus options.
Interested in Living Off Campus
If you are an incoming student and you would like to live off campus, you are able to do so without further action. The MSU Off-Campus Housing website is a great resource to explore your off-campus housing options. MSU Student and Community Relations also has a helpful Off-Campus Housing webinar available to you!
Spring Transfer and Returning Students
Transfer students are already waived from the two-year live-on requirement and are encouraged to visit the MSU Off-Campus Housing Website to begin your search for off-campus housing and to review resources related to reviewing leases and being a community member in Greater Lansing.

Additional Questions & Answers
Why is spring housing so limited?
With a large incoming class and high interest from returning students, the demand for on-campus housing increased enough to create transitional housing this fall. Many of our peer institutions in the Big Ten experienced large incoming class sizes. We saw higher deposits and less cancellations throughout the summer and into fall semester than previous years.
In addition, we have one residence hall offline for renovations this year, Campbell Hall.
With this, we have spent the fall semester working to break down transitionally housed rooms for the fall class, and we are still working to get everyone in permanent assignments. We need to honor our commitment to those students before we can offer space to other students. We anticipate having a limited number of spaces for spring that we can offer to incoming students.
Each year we work together with our partners across campus to plan for the anticipated incoming class and the space necessary to ensure both first-year and second-year students have a positive on-campus living experience.
But what if I want to live on campus next year?
If we were unable to provide you housing for spring, or if you did not request on-campus housing for spring, you are waived from the two-year live-on requirement.
With that being said, we want to house as many of our first- and second-year students as possible to support academic and personal success at MSU. We will offer interested spring incoming students the opportunity to select on-campus housing for the 2025-26 academic year.
We will share more details on how you can request 2025-26 housing selection access in January. The 2025-26 housing selection process will take place in March 2025.
Please note, this decision does not include transfer students. They will continue to be waived from the two-year live-on requirement in 2025-26.
