Michigan State University is home to 27 residence halls and three apartment communities in five residential neighborhoods. Students are required to live on campus for their first four semesters at MSU, not including summer semester. For several years, we have looked at the impact that on- and off-campus living has on our undergraduate students. According to MSU’s Office of Institutional Research, undergraduates who live on campus for their first two years at MSU have higher graduation rates than their peers who live on campus only during their first year.
On-Campus Housing Sign-Up is now broken out into three main phases:
- Fall: On-Campus Apartment Sign-Up – Current second-year students and above
- Spring: First-Year Student Residence Hall Sign-Up
- Summer: Incoming Student Residence Hall Housing Preferences and Assignments
During each phase, eligible students will sign-up for their on-campus space. Returning students will be able to select their spaces while incoming students will indicate preferences and be assigned a room.
Additionally, we have sign-up periods for students who start at MSU in spring semester, as well as for students needing summer housing.

ON-CAMPUS HOUSING REQUIREMENT
First-year and second-year students must live in on-campus housing for the first four semesters they are enrolled. Failure to adhere to the on-campus housing requirement may result in termination of enrollment. Learn more about the two-year live-on reinstatement here.
