Renters Insurance for MSU Residents

As outlined in the MSU Housing Contract, Michigan State University does not assume financial responsibility for residents’ personal property. MSU is also not financially responsible for large‑scale, unintentional damage caused by on‑campus residents, such as damage resulting from a fire,  accidental sprinkler discharge or other loss.

Residents can read more in the contract Terms and Conditions, found here: liveon.msu.edu/Documents.

What Is Renters Insurance?

The University is not liable for theft, damage or loss of personal belongings that may occur while living in the residence hall. Renters insurance can help cover personal property that is lost, stolen, or damaged due to certain covered causes. It may also provide liability coverage if a resident is found legally responsible for damage to university property or for injury to others.

Renters insurance is optional and is not required by Michigan State University.  However in order to best protect students and their personal property - Michigan State University urges each student to purchase some form of insurance, whether it be renters insurance or a rider on their parent's homeowner's insurance.

Considering Your Options

Students and families are encouraged to review their individual situations and insurance options carefully before selecting coverage. Some students may be covered under a parent or guardian’s homeowners insurance policy, in other cases, a separate renters insurance policy may be appropriate.  One potential option is set forth in more detail below.
