We believe there are two core identities that we all share: we are human and learners. Within the MRULE/ICA program, we are guided by an embrace of learning, both individually and collectively. Together, we discover new ways of being, thinking, and engaging more holistically with ourselves, each other, and the world.
Our process of learning is made up of four interrelated practices: study, consultation, action, and reflection. As Brazilian philosopher of education, Paulo Freire, writes: “apart from inquiry…individuals cannot be truly human. Knowledge emerges only through invention and re-invention, through the restless, impatient, continuing, hopeful inquiry human beings pursue in the world, with the world, and with each other.”
ICAs are supported weekly in this practice through our Training & Education Engaged Learning Opportunity (TEELO) facilitated by our professional staff. TEELO is where ICAs refine their practice as community builders and deepen their understanding of the core concepts that connect our work to the world around us. Ask an ICA what they learned during TEELO this week!
“We can only create a better world together and none of us could be here without each other. We only have this planet that we share, and these people who we share it with, and it makes us ask the question, ‘Is this the best we can do?’ and if not ‘Are we going to make it better?’” - MRULE/ICA Participant
