April 1st to May 5th
Pack Up. Pitch In. is a division-wide effort to reduce residence hall waste during move-in and move-out periods. By increasing the visibility and capacity of recycling options at busy times of year, Pack Up. Pitch In. diverts a large amount of materials from landfills. We encourage students to pack up undesired room items and turn them into valuable resources. Large items and appliances should never be placed into dumpsters!
Spartans, give your unwanted items a second life!
Help support MSU and greater Lansing community by donating unwanted household goods, clothing, shoes, books, bikes, electronics, furniture and nonperishable food items.
Collection Locations
Food and Personal Care Items
Nonperishable food items and personal care items donations will be collected in labeled totes located at residence hall Service Centers.
Nonperishable foods are items that don’t spoil quickly, such as:
- Pasta, rice, and dry cereal
- Canned goods (soups, vegetables, fruits, beans)
- Crackers, snack bars, and juices
Household Items, Clothing, and E-Waste
Household items, clothing, electronics, and e-waste will be collected in labeled bins located in residence hall lobbies.
Large Furniture and Bulky Items
For large furniture and bulky items such as carpet and appliances, collection locations vary based on residence hall. Posted signage and residence hall staff can assist in guiding to the correct donation locations.
Recycling Stations
If your items don’t fit into the donation categories, please use the residence hall recycling stations for:
- All paper
- Boxboard
- Plastics #1 & #2
- Metal Cans
- Glass
- Cardboard (with packing materials removed) - broken down and taken to outdoor recycling bins near dumpsters
Why should I participate?
Your donations directly support:
The MSU Student Food Bank and Basic Needs, providing food for students in need
The MSU Surplus Store & Recycling Center (SSRC), a nonprofit that promotes reuse through thrift sales, upcycling events, and student support programs
