Pitch in and donate!
Spartans, we want your unwanted items and nonperishable food items. You can donate household goods, clothing, shoes, books, bikes, electronics, furniture, and food.
Where can these items be donated?
You can donate your unwanted items at designated bins in residence hall lobbies. Nonperishable food items will be collected at service centers.
What is a nonperishable food item?
Food that is not subject to rapid deterioration or decay. This includes pasta, dry cereal, canned items, crackers, soups, snack bars, and juices.
When will donations be accepted?
November 20 through the end of the semester!
What about items that do not fit these categories?
For all other items students do not want, they can bring them to designated recycling stations in residence halls. This includes paper, newspaper, boxboard, glass, all plastics, household metals, and cardboard (with packing materials removed).
Why should I participate?
The items you donate help support the MSU and local community. Items collected go to the MSU Student Food Bank and the MSU Surplus Store and Recycling Center (SSRC). The SSRC is a non-profit organization and strives to maintain a closed loop system for reusable materials. They host events like thrift sales and upcycling events for MSU students. They also provide vouchers for students in need to come and purchase donated items from the store. Items that are not purchased/selected at the SSRC are donated to other community organizations.
Can my student organization host their own food/clothing drive in the residence halls?
Pack Up Pitch In is the only approved program to host collection bins within our residence halls. There are ways to get involved in sustainability efforts through the SLE Sustainability Office, please contact the SLE Sustainability Officer at iansiti@msu.edu to learn more. The MSU Center for Community Engaged Learning (CCEL) also offers ways for student organizations to get involved and earn volunteer hours!
The Pack Up Pitch In program is a great way to clean out your room, get ready for winter break and support the community!
