Reporting Bias

Residence Education and Housing Services works tirelessly to ensure that all residents feel safe, secure, and welcomed to the Michigan State University community. We want you to know that we take bias incidents very seriously.

What is a bias incident?

A bias incident is an incident of verbal or non-verbal conduct that is threatening, harassing, intimidating, discriminatory or hostile and is based on a category protected under the MSU Anti-Discrimination Policy (“ADP”). Please also see the MSU Anti-Harrassment Statement for more information.

When a bias incident has been reported, the primary concern is the impact on the group or person targeted. The targeted group or person is empowered and given choices to address the incident. Our staff also works closely with the group or person targeted to provide support and ensure their well-being.

How do I report a bias incident?

  • If your immediate safety is threatened, believe a crime has been committed,  or you wish to file a police report, please contact the MSU Police Department:
    • Emergency Number: 911
    • Non-Emergency Number: 517-355-2221
  • Report the incident to a resident assistant (RA), intercultural aide (ICA), community director (CD), assistant community director (ACD)
  • If you would like to report a bias incident, you can submit this Discrimination/Harassment Formal Complaint Form online. More information is available at
