As students prepare for the final few weeks of classes, it’s important to start to consider plans for housing during winter break. While some students travel or head home for a few weeks, other students prefer to stay on campus to work or relax on a much quieter campus.
All residents that are not planning to remain on campus during winter break must be out of residence halls by 8 p.m. on Friday, December 14 and cannot move back in until 8 a.m. on Sunday, January 6.
Some students may not want to live on campus for the entire winter break, but would prefer to stay a day or two late or come back to campus a day or two early. These students should log into their My Housing account to select either a late stay or an early arrival. Costs are as follows:
• Staying until Saturday, December 15 – there will be no extra charge to the student’s account
• Staying until Sunday, December 16 – there will be a one-night charge to the student’s account
• Returning on Friday, January 4 – there will be a one-night charge to the student’s account
• Returning on Saturday, January 5 – there will be no extra charge to the student’s account
Students that want to stay on campus between fall and spring semesters must apply at My Housing for between-semester housing. Between-semester housing is available in Hubbard, Wonders, McDonel and Owen Halls. Students wishing to stay over winter break that do not live in these halls will be placed on a Visiting Scholars floor in Owen Hall. Students permanently residing in 1855 Place, University Village and Van Hoosen do not need to apply for winter break housing because it is included in their lease.
The between-semester housing contract runs from Monday, December 17, through Thursday, January 3. Students staying on campus for the entire break or even just part of the break will pay a flat fee of $315 for housing and dining. The dining plan includes 30 accesses to Brody Square or the Edge at Akers.
If a student needs to stay until December 17 or a bit later in order to catch a flight, we suggest they book a room at the Kellogg Hotel and Conference Center. Rooms are available for $55 + tax per person, based on availability (parking also available during break in the Kellogg Hotel & Conference Center garage for $150). Contact the Kellogg Hotel & Conference Center at 517-884-8121 for additional information and to make a reservation.
Students staying on campus over winter break should also be aware of the changes in hours of operation for staff. The primary desk in each neighborhood will be open from 7 a.m. until 7 p.m. Resident Assistants will be on duty from 7 p.m. until 7 a.m. Students will have to use their IDs to scan into residence halls during winter break. Dining will be available at Brody Square and the Edge at Akers; visit the Eat at State website for hours.
No matter where you end up this winter break, we hope all Spartans have a safe, happy, and relaxing few weeks.
