Beds and Adjustments

Residence Hall Beds

Residence hall beds require twin extra-long, 80" sheets. Beds are adjustable, meaning they can be set at bunked, standard, trundled, or lofted height.

  • Standard - normal, lowered bed height
  • Trundle - about 3 feet off the ground
  • Lofted - 5 feet off the ground
  • Bunked - one bed standard height, one bed lofted height above

Double rooms will be set to one lofted and one trundled bed at move-in, unless the layout does not allow for this. Akers units will have three lofted beds and one trundled bed.

Bed Adjustments

Residents of halls, other than Hubbard Hall, may adjust their university-provided bed equipment, consistent with reasonable usage as designed. (See instructions below.) The bed may not be modified or manipulated in a way that is not consistent with the construction of the furniture as intended. Residents may not construct their own lofts of furniture and must use the university-provided items. If residents are unsure of how to properly raise and lower their bed, or need assistance, they should reach out to REHS Facilities staff through an online maintenance request. Requests will begin to be accepted on August 4.

Residents of Hubbard Hall may not adjust their bed equipment, including raising and lowering, as this furniture requires additional equipment for modification. Instead, Hubbard Hall residents should complete an online maintenance request for adjustment.

While bed adjustments cannot usually be accommodated during move-in, Facilities staff will begin bed adjustments as soon as they can. We expect most to begin in September.

Bed Adjustment Instructions

Students may adjust their bed using the steps below. Please read all instructions and safety notes carefully before beginning.

Equipment Required

  • Rubber mallet
  • A minimum of two people is required for all adjustments

Safety Guidelines for All Adjustments

  • Do not attempt to adjust the bed alone.
  • Never stand underneath the bed during any part of the adjustment process.
  • Ensure the safety guard rail and stabilizer bar remain in place in any selected bed position, and that they face outward toward the living space (not against a wall).
  • Never adjust the bed frame height while the bed is up high in the lofted position. Instead, either:
    • Follow the Trundle Bed Adjustment Instructions or
    • Remove the lofted bed frame section from the crib section and place on the floor, then make adjustments from there before reconnecting (see steps in Standard Height Adjustment Instructions for more information on adjusting height).
