Residence Education and Housing Services works tirelessly to ensure that all residents feel safe, secure, and welcomed to the Michigan State University community. We want you to know that we take incidents of discrimination and/or harassment very seriously.
The Office of Institutional Equity (OIE) reviews concerns related to discrimination and harassment based on age, color, gender, gender identity, disability status, height, marital status, national origin, political persuasion, race, religion, sexual orientation, veteran status, and weight under the MSU Anti-discrimination Policy (ADP) and Policy on Relationship Violence and Sexual Misconduct (RVSM). OIE staff is available to provide information on the policies, connect MSU community members to resources, investigate complaints, and provide training.
What is an incident of discrimination or harassment?
Discrimination or harassment is verbal or non-verbal conduct that is threatening, harassing, intimidating, discriminatory or hostile and is based on a category protected under the ADP.
When an incident has been reported, the primary concern is the impact on the group or person targeted. The targeted group or person is empowered and given choices to address the incident. Our staff also works closely with the group or person targeted to provide support and ensure their well-being.
How do I report an incident?
If your immediate safety is threatened, believe a crime has been committed or you wish to file a police report, please contact MSU Police:
- Emergency Number: 911
- Non-Emergency Number: 517-355-2221
Report the incident to a resident assistant (RA), intercultural aide (ICA), community director (CD) or assistant community director (ACD).
If you would like to report an incident, you can submit this Discrimination/Harassment Formal Complaint Form online. More information is available at the Office of Institutional Equity.
