The wait is over—Rock the Block is here! You've heard the buzz, now let's go over the details. Are you looking to reserve a few suites in South for you and your friends? Or maybe a block of rooms on the same floor in Brody? With Rock the Block, signing up with your friends is easy!
Join us at 1855 Place on Friday, March 14, from 1-5:30 p.m.*, and with the help of our team, you and your group can block off a series of rooms in a residence hall to live together in 2025-26.
Here’s what you need to know for this year’s Rock the Block:
- Roommate groups must consist of 6-10 students.
- You must form your Rock the Block roommate group and register for the event between February 18 and March 11 in My Housing. First, you’ll designate a Group Leader and create the group. They’ll need everyone’s name and MSU email.
- Once your group is created in My Housing, the Group Leader will select a specific time window to choose your space at the event. Group Leaders must attend the event. If your group registered for multiple times, we will remove the extra appointments, and only the group leader's selection will remain.
- Groups cannot sign up before their selected time window. Time windows will be between 1 p.m. and 5:30 p.m.
- On March 14, your Group Leader should check in no earlier than 30 minutes before your selected time. Early arrival or lining up is not allowed.
To create, accept or deny a roommate group, click “Create or Respond to Rock the Block Group” in your My Housing account. To register, click “Register for Rock the Block Arrival Time” in your My Housing account.
Only the Group Leader from your group needs to attend the event, but they must arrive during the designated window you select. The Group Leader will select rooms and dining plans for each member.

Questions?
What do I have to do to be eligible for Rock the Block?
To be eligible, you must be a current first-year student, and make sure you sign your housing contract in My Housing prior to joining a Rock the Block roommate group.
When and where is Rock the Block?
Rock the Block will take place Friday, March 14, from 1 – 5:30 p.m. at 1855 Place. When you complete the registration form, you will select a sign-up time window.
When can I arrive?
Groups can arrive up to 30 minutes before their scheduled sign-up time. However, groups are not allowed to form lines or arrive any earlier than the 30-minute window before their selected time. Because of the sign-up times, there is no advantage to arriving early.
What will I get to do at Rock the Block?
At this event, you and your friends will get to block off a series of rooms in a residence hall so you can have the perks of living with your close friends for the 2025-26 academic year.
Who needs to attend Rock the Block?
The group leader, the person who created the Rock the Block group, needs to attend and select the spaces for everyone in the group. If the group leader cannot attend, choose another member to lead the group. Other group members are welcome to attend, but it’s not required.
How many people can be in a RTB roommate group?
RTB roommate groups can have between 6-10 students. If your group has fewer than 6 people, you can create a standard roommate group and select a space during the general selection later in March.
What information does the Group Leader need for the event?
The Group Leader should have a list of preferred halls for your group. They also need to know the dining plan each group member wants. (Dining plans can be changed between May and July.)
What if I don't have a roommate group for Rock the Block?
If you can’t make it, don’t worry! You can still select your roommates and suitemates, subject to space availability, during general sign-up. Or book a meeting with a housing specialist to go over your options.
Can incoming students or students living off campus be in our RTB roommate group?
No. RTB roommate groups must consist of current first-year students who are living on campus and have a signed housing contract.
What if me or a potential roommate is participating in single room sign-up?
Rock the Block roommate groups must be created by March 11. If you or someone in your group selects a single room during that selection period, they can be removed from the roommate group before the Rock the Block event.
What if I’m participating in Living-Learning Community (LLC) sign-up?
Rock the Block is for selecting general, non-LLC rooms. If participating in LLC sign-up, you’ll be selecting rooms and living with people in your LLC. You will create a roommate group using the general link and select during your LLC sign-up window. If you want assistance in finding a block of rooms in your LLC, book a meeting with a housing specialist to go over available options.
What if I need additional sign-up support?
If you have more questions, you can book a 30-minute meeting with a housing specialist at https://go.msu.edu/housing-appt. You can choose a virtual or in-person appointment. We’ll have appointments available from March 18 through April 8. You will need to be logged into Spartan365 with your MSU NetID and password to see the calendar.
How do I contact someone if I have more questions?
As always, the Housing Assignments Office can be reached at liveon@msu.edu or by phone at 517-884-5483.
