CAMPUS MAPS & NAVIGATION
The MSU campus map can be accessed online or obtained as a physical copy at any Service Center. Additionally, you can download the MSU mobile app from the App Store or Google Play Store, which includes a searchable campus map for easy location finding
WALKING
With more than 120 miles of pedestrian walkways and sidewalks, walking is the most popular option to get to and from at MSU! Additionally, there are over 12 miles of pathways and trails on the MSU campus. These pass through every neighborhood, making it easy to utilize these trails for walking, and any other kind of mobility.
CATA
The Capital Area Transportation Authority (CATA) bus system is free for all students during the fall and spring semesters along all on-campus routes. These routes conveniently serve university apartments, residence halls, commuter lots, and main campus facilities. Most on-campus routes operate until 2:30 a.m., and if you need late-night transportation, the Night Owl service offers discounted rates. CATA also offers routes that extend to off-campus areas like East Lansing, Lansing, Okemos, and Haslett, with options to pay per ride or purchase passes.
MOPEDS
Students operating a moped on campus are required to register the vehicle with the MSU Parking Office. Moped registration fees are $50 for a one-year permit. As a reminder, all mopeds and motorcycles must also be registered with the Michigan Secretary of State to be eligible to purchase an MSU parking permit.
Also, beginning in the 2018-19 academic year, mopeds must be parked in designated moped parking areas on campus. Moped operators should not ride a moped on the sidewalk. These regulations are in response to a recommendation made by the All-university Traffic and Transportation Committee (AUTTC) and the feedback received from students.
All vehicles, including motorcycles, mopeds and bicycles, operated or parked on MSU property by students must be registered with the Parking Office. Failure to do so may result in parking violations and vehicle impoundment. Revenue from the parking system is used to support, maintain and improve campus parking facilities and improve traffic safety.
SPIN ELECTRIC SCOOTERS
During the non-winter months, Spin Electric Scooters offer a convenient way to get around campus. Using the dock-less scooter share system, you can locate and unlock a nearby scooter using your smartphone. Please note that electric transportation, including e-scooters, e-bikes, and hoverboards, are not allowed inside campus buildings.
CARS
Freshman students are not permitted to have cars on campus. However, if you are a commuter student or an upperclassman residing off-campus, you may register your vehicle with the university as a commuter. Students who live on campus must have a minimum of 28 credits to register their vehicles for on-campus parking. Once you meet the eligibility criteria, you can purchase a parking permit through MSU Parking Services.
BICYCLES
MSU has been recognized as a Bicycle Friendly University by the League of American Bicyclists. With more than half of our roads equipped with bike lanes and over 20,000 bicycle parking spaces, biking is a popular mode of transportation on campus. If you need to rent, repair, buy, or equip a bike, the Bikes Service Center is here to assist you. All students must register their bike with the MSU Police and Public Safety office if they bring their own bike to campus.
MSU BIKES
MSU Bikes is a service of the MSU Sustainability division of the MSU Infrastructure Planning and Facilities department. Dedicated to promoting bicycling as a safe, fun, economical, efficient, environmentally friendly, and healthy transportation alternative for the MSU campus community, MSU Bikes operates the MSU Bikes Service Center, a full-service bike repair and rental facility. The MSU Bikes Service Center is located under the Bessey Hall auditorium on the river trail 300 feet northwest of the Farm Lane bridge.
