Basic Function
This position’s primary responsibility is to support and assist residents of Family Housing and carrying forward the mission and goals of Residence Education and Housing Services (REHS) in the Family Housing at 1855 Place community. This position is responsible for assisting with community needs, co-managing a regular partnership with the Student Parent Resource Center, addressing neighbor conflicts, responding to resident emergencies, assisting as appropriate with facilities concerns, and serving in the Bailey/Emmons/Apartments ACD on-call duty rotation. Depending on the needs/priorities of the department, other duties may also be assigned.
This is a half-time graduate assistantship position which requires approximately 20 hours per week. This is a 12-month position. Residence Education and Housing Services team members are committed to providing exceptional and equitable community experiences, one connection at a time.
Responsibilities
- Establish informal relationships with residents and build visibility in the community through attending and facilitating community programs, student group meetings, eating in the dining hall, building rounds, etc.
- Work with University Apartments REHS staff to assist current and prospective community members in achieving academic and personal success.
- Facilitate community learning and engagement in accordance with the Residential Learning Experience through the planning and implementation of programs and interventions intentionally designed for the Family Housing community.
- Meet with new residents of Family Housing to assist with acclimation to on-campus Family-style living at MSU.
- Assist residents with neighbor conflicts when necessary.
- Serve in an on-call rotation.
- Respond to level-one facilities issues when facilities staff are not working and engage supervisors and trades for bigger facility needs.
- Monitor the community environment and address noise and cleanliness concerns.
- Respond and engage other emergency personnel in safety or emergency concerns document any occurrences appropriately.
- Support Housing Assignments Office with communication to current and prospective residents about Family Housing availability, lease cycle details, and other occupancy related matters.
- Regularly communicate with the Community Director and Facilities Manager about community needs and performance.
- Meet biweekly with Student Parent Resource Center to refine partnership, identify students of concern, and co-implement engagement and resource opportunities.
- Co-advise UACOR.
- Conduct CARE follow-up for Family Housing residents in collaboration with the Community Director and RCCE.
- Adjudicate conduct, specifically involving residents in Family Housing when relevant.
- Assist REHS partners with outreach to prospective Family Housing residents.
- Attend and participate in REHS trainings, meetings, and committees.
- Design and facilitate training and development opportunities for REHS staff working with Family Housing.
- Other duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS
- Admitted to a graduate degree program at Michigan State University prior to appointment
- Skills in the areas of: critical thinking, conflict management, interpersonal communication, good written and verbal communication, and can be detail oriented.
- Ability to interact with a diverse population with cultural competence
- Available to work a full academic year (August through May)
Preferred Qualifications
- Previous on-campus housing leadership experience (residence halls, campusapartments, etc.)
- Previous experience with family development, early childhood development, etc.employment experience in a student housing environment
- Employment experience in a student housing environment
Conditions of Employment
- A resume and cover letter are required as part of the application process.
- Appointment is contingent upon a completed BA/BS and acceptance into a degree-granting graduate program at Michigan State University.
- Preference will be given to candidates with a year of relevant experience and strong organizational, administrative, and leadership skills.
- Must enroll for a minimum of six credits and may carry a maximum of twelve credits per
semester (fall and spring). - A minimum 3.0 grade point average must be maintained during the period of employment.
- Responsible for fees and tuition associated with their graduate program, beyond the nine credit tuition waiver.
Supervision Received
The Graduate Assistant for Family Housing at 1855 Place reports to and is supervised by the
Community Director of the Apartments. Contact is expected on a regular and frequent basis,
including regular one-on-one meetings. Written reports may be expected concerning specific
situations.
Physical Effort
Mildly disagreeable working conditions involve working in an environment with limited privacy and potential for a low level of excessive noise. The job involves night and weekend work on a regular basis and staff must frequently respond to situations at any time of the day and night. The job requires moderate physical effort when responding to calls.
Remuneration
Remuneration includes a furnished apartment, meal plan while school is in session, qualification for in-state tuition rates, matriculation fee waiver, a monthly cash stipend, and single-person health insurance paid for by the University. Nine credits of tuition are waived for each semester (Fall and Spring) at the MSU base graduate tuition rate.
