UView: Nov. 2012 The Housing Decision

The Housing Decision
When your student comes home for the semester break, we encourage you to have a discussion with them regarding their housing plans for next year. Choosing where to live next year is a big decision. Your student owes it to themselves to take time to think things over, consider all their options and pick a housing option that best fits their lifestyle and schedule. To secure the best campus housing option, students should sign up early to avoid being put on the housing waiting list. Online sign-up for fall 2013 started in October and goes through April 1, 2013. We hope the information in this copy of the U View will provide you with information to have a well-informed discussion with your student. As always, please feel free to contact us with any questions you may have.

Dollars and Sense
Students who live on campus pay a set rate for everything associated with their housing, unlike off-campus housing where bills vary each month for water, electric, gas – even cable and Internet. Living on campus makes budgeting easy for students getting a first taste of independence from home.

Housing Flexibility
Students who will only be on campus for one semester due to graduation, participation in a study abroad program or an out-of-town internship can find flexible housing on campus, where their housing contract can be cancelled for these reasons. Students who are forced to drop to part-time class status or withdraw from the university due to an unexpected financial hardship will not be bound to their contract. This is not the case for students who live off campus.

Fall 2013 – Spring 2014 Housing Sign-up Schedule
Some students have already signed up for housing next year, but for those who have not done so, there is still time. Information has been directly communicated in multiple ways to your student so they know how and when to select a room, and sign their housing contract.

Students can sign up online at www.liveon.msu.edu by clicking on iLiveOn (formerly MyHousing) through 11:59 p.m. on April 1, 2013.

Oct. 29 – April 1

Sign up for any available single room, double room or apartment, anywhere on campus.

After April 1
Contact the Housing Assignments Office by calling 517-884-LIVE (5483) or emailing liveon@msu.edu to sign up for available housing.

Students Can Sign Up to Live With Friends at Rock the Block
Students will soon have an opportunity to blocks of rooms in the halls to live with their friends for fall 2013 – spring 2014 at this year’s Rock the Block event, Sunday, December 2 from 3 p.m. – 6 p.m. at the Breslin Center. Students will have the chance to sign up for rooms in a variety of residence hall locations, free food, activities and giveaways.
