Learning Opportunities

Residence Education and Housing Services graduate student employees are afforded opportunities to apply theory to practice by gaining hands-on experience in supervision, student conduct, advising, emergency crisis response, training, selection and committee work. They also receive ongoing training and professional development opportunities, acquiring transferable skills that will carry over to future career opportunities.

REHS frames the work, training and professional development opportunities made available to students in Graduate Assistant positions based on the competencies of national associations such as NASPA – Student Affairs Administrators in Higher Education, the American College Personnel Association (ACPA), and the Association of College and University Housing Officers – International (ACUHO-I).

The Assistant Community Director (ACD) position is a part-time, live-in graduate assistantship within Residence Education and Housing Services. The ACD role provides many skill building opportunities and experiences in supervision, student leadership advising, crisis response, conduct process facilitation, and curriculum implementation. This position partners with a diverse group of students, staff, and faculty to develop an environment that promotes the mission of the university. ACDs are directly responsible for the training, supervision, and evaluation of student staff members. ACDs work with Community Directors (CDs) to create safe, inclusive, and educational communities that encourage and foster student success and development. ACDs are required to live in an assigned apartment on campus. Compensation includes a fully furnished apartment, silver dining meal plan, complimentary internet and cable, biweekly stipend, and a tuition waiver. This is a half–time graduate assistantship position which requires 20 hours a week and will include weekend and evening hours. The graduate assistant for assessment is a half-time assistantship within Residence Education and Housing Services. Reporting to an associate director, this position has primary responsibility in supporting and assisting the department with its assessment and evaluation needs and processes. The GA for assessment is responsible for assisting with development and execution of evaluation tools, data entry and analysis, with a specific focus on the residential curriculum.

The Communications Graduate Assistant (GA) is a half-time position that assists the Assistant Director of Communications with a variety of functions for Residence Education and Housing Services (REHS) in reaching the goal of being an inclusive and world-class entity.  The workweek is approximately 20 hours per week with occasional nights and weekends. The successful candidate will be an experienced, take-charge individual with ability to manage administration and logistics in support of a busy marketing and communications environment. Must be able to anticipate project needs, discern work priorities, and meet deadlines with little supervision, and be willing to work occasional evenings and weekends. Candidates should have a love for communications and  event management, provide outstanding customer service, be an enthusiastic professional, and be able to build relationships with internal and external customers. The Graduate Assistant (GA) for Diversity and Inclusion (D&I) is a half-time assistantship within Residence Education and Housing Services, reporting to the Associate Director of Diversity & Inclusion. This position has primary responsibility in overseeing the development and success of the Neighborhood Black and Queer Caucuses through intentional advisor development and leadership opportunities. The Graduate Assistant for Outreach is a part-time assistantship within Residence Education and Housing Services. This position aids in the development, administration, and planning for the Michigan State University Tour Program. Working closely with full-time staff members in REHS and the Office of Admissions, this position is responsible for the selection, training, and development of undergraduate student supervisors (n=8) and tour guides (n=120). In addition to intense mentoring and development of students, this position is responsible for numerous administrative tasks for the MSU tour program, including: managing scheduling and payroll process for the department; evaluation and assessment; monitoring student labor budget; student employee evaluation; program assessment; outreach and direct contact with internal and external audiences (including students, faculty, parents, and distinguished guests). The REHS Outreach Office delivers over 26,000 tours and participates in over 300 events and fairs annually, including MSU Academic Orientation Programs, Parent Orientation Programs, Green and White Days, & Inside MSU among many others. REHS Outreach maintains formal partnerships with the Office of Admissions, MSU Athletics, Academic Colleges, and many others. The Graduate Assistant for Recruitment, Selection and Training is a half-time assistantship within Residence Education and Housing Services. This position’s primary responsibility is to support and assist the Staff Recruitment, Selection, and Training Coordinator regarding all functions of recruitment, selection, training, and staff discipline within Residence Education and Housing Services (REHS).  Depending on the needs/priorities of the department, other duties may also be assigned. The Graduate Assistant for Spartan Village Apartments is a half-time, live-in assistantship. This position’s primary responsibility is to support and assist residents of Spartan Village and carrying forward the mission and goals of Residence Education and Housing Services (REHS) in that community. This position is responsible for assisting with community needs, neighbor or apartment conflicts, resident emergencies, some facilities concerns, and serving as the on-call contact for residents with needs when the business office is closed. Wonderbodies is a fitness facility located within Wonders Hall. This facility is open to all on-campus residents and features a variety of workout equipment. The Graduate Assistant (GA) for Wonderbodies is a half-time graduate assistantship which oversees the operation of the facility.  Duties would include supervision of student staff, promotion of the facility and membership sales, and management of cash handling procedures. The GA could work in conjunction with IM Sports in order to offer a high quality gym experience. The GA would be responsible for staffing the facility.   • Graduate Assistant for Leadership and Advising - We will not be taking applications for this position for the 2018-19 academic year. 

The graduate assistant for leadership and advising is a half-time graduate assistantship with Residence Education and Housing Services. The GA will coordinate the REAL Talk leadership seminar series, serve as an advisor to the Residence Hall Association, as well as design, develop, and deliver various leadership training programs.  The GA is responsible for developing leadership skills in students and REHS staff through on-going training, one-on-one coaching, and assessment of leadership skills. This is a half–time graduate assistantship position which requires 20 hours a week and will include weekend and evening hours. This is a 9 month position with the possibility of summer employment.  Summer employment is based upon available funding and positive performance during the academic year.

Compensation and Benefits for Graduate Assistantships

Compensation varies depending on the nature of the position.  Positions are 9 month positions, Fall and Spring Semesters.

Appointment dates are:
Fall Semester: August 16, 2018 - December 31, 2018
Spring Semetser:  January 1, 2019 - May 15, 2019

Actual start dates may vary by position. Assistant Community Director positions begin with a workshop training that typically starts two weeks prior to the August appointment date. Winter break work hours also vary by position. 

Stipend:

Assistant Community Directors are live-in:

  • Level 1 - $6994/9 months plus furnished apartment and meal plan
  • Level 2 - $7164/9 months plus furnished apartment and meal plan

Graduate Assistant for Spartan Village Apartments are live-in:

  • Furnish apartment in Spartan Village plus stipend (yet to be determined)

Non-live-in Assistantships 

  • Level 1 - $15,093/9 months
  • Level 2 - $16,692/9 months

Stipends are paid bi-weekly.

All REHS graduate assistants also receive: 

  • In-state tuition rates
  • Nine-credit tuition waiver per semester at the base MSU graduate credit rate (fall and spring semesters)
  • Matriculation fee waiver
  • Single-person student health insurance coverage
