LIVING ON CAMPUS

Be Spartan Green

At MSU, we take our commitment to the environment seriously. We offer recycling throughout all campus buildings, including residence halls. During move-in, look for the Pack Up. Pitch In. Help Out. recycling stations set up outdoors, near your hall lobby entrance.

Residents can recycle all plastics, metal, white and mixed paper, newspaper, printer cartridges, cardboard/boxboard and glass year-round on the first floor of each building and in the community kitchens. In your room, you will also find these gifts:

  • A recycling bag to transport items to a recycling station 
  • A Be Spartan Green water bottle to fill at campus hydration stations

We encourage you to help reduce energy consumption by turning off lights and unplugging appliances when not needed. Visit www.bespartangreen.msu.edu to learn more about how you can do your part.

Eat at State

Enjoy dining excellence from 7:00 a.m. to midnight, seven days a week, in dining halls and other venues across campus. CATA Bus System

MSU uses the Capital Area Transportation Authority (CATA) bus system on campus. CATA can take you to a wide variety of locations throughout the greater Lansing area. Learn more by reading the Move-in 2014 Information article or purchase your bus pass online at www.cata.org. You can also buy passes at a variety of locations across campus.

Hall Service Centers

Visit your hall’s service center to pick up packages, send outgoing U.S. mail, check-out vacuums, get a loaner room key if yours is misplaced, and more.

Required Room Condition and Furnishings Inventory Checklist

Please take a few minutes to complete and return a Room Condition and Furnishings Inventory Checklist that you received at check-in to record the condition and inventory of items in your room upon move-in. You must complete this form and return it to the service center within seven days of moving in. 

Maintenance Requests

Residents can submit maintenance requests or report problems 24/7 online at www.liveon.msu.edu/maintenance.

Storage for Personal Items

Students can rent storage space through MSU Surplus Store. Visit www.msusurplusstore.com and select the Storage Services tab for more information. Residence halls do not have storage rooms available for personal items.

 Linen Exchange

A basic white linen packet is part of your room package; it includes two towels, a pillowcase and twin extra-long bed sheets. These are available to you during check-in and are cleaned by Spartan Linen Services, the on-campus laundry. Each hall has a weekly linen exchange at a designated location where you get clean sheets and towels at no additional cost. Ask at the service center for your hall’s designated location.

High-Speed and Wireless Internet

High-speed internet is available in all residential rooms. While we are in the process of upgrading our buildings with wireless options, at this time only limited residences halls (Akers, Butterfield, Case, Landon and Wilson) offer wireless internet throughout the building, including residential rooms.

To get connected, you must register your computer or other device with MSU servers. Each room has a brochure to assist you in registering your technology device. You can also find the instructions online at www.help.msu.edu or you may call 517-432-6200

During move-in, you can also find Information Technology Services (ITS) staff in your neighborhood engagement center to assist you. For help by phone, call 517-432-6200. Help is available 24 hours a day (except on university recognized holidays).

Cable Television

Digital cable television service is already active in all student rooms. Please make sure to use a coax cable with a screw-on connector rather than a push-on connector to prevent RF leakage (when the signal escapes the coax cable). If a leak is found in your room, you may be charged for repairs.

Bikes and Mopeds

Bikes and mopeds must be parked/locked only to outdoor bike racks. You are required to register your bike with the MSU Police at no charge. Visit www.police.msu.edu and select Bicycle Information under Parking.

Parking Permits

If you are a sophomore or older you may have a car on campus. Visit http://permits.police.msu.edu to register your car with the MSU Police and apply for a parking permit. 

Community Kitchens

In each neighborhood, there are community kitchens that you can use to cook or bake. Residents may also reserve the space for a group event through the hall’s service center. Kitchens are fully stocked with appliances and utensils. All you need to bring is the food!

Staying Safe on Campus

MSU takes the safety and security of our residents very seriously. We also believe students must share responsibility for staying safe on campus. Please remember, you are responsible for your guests, never travel alone at night and never prop open doors.

An electronic door access system is in place in our residence halls 24 hours a day, requiring students to scan their MSU ID card to enter through exterior doors and interior doors that lead to living wings. There are also green light emergency phones within sight of every room and throughout campus. If you lose your MSU ID, report it to the service center immediately.

Work at MSU

Apply online at www.jobs.rhs.msu.edu to work in our residence halls, dining halls, and more. The division of Residential and Hospitality Services offers many on-campus job opportunities.

 Spartan Cash

Visit www.spartancash.com or call 517-355-CASH (2274) to open an account, add money to your existing account or view vendors accepting Spartan Cash. Make your MSU ID work for you at locations both on and off campus.

 University Activities Board (UAB)

Visit www.uabevents.com to learn more about the variety of events hosted on campus (most FREE to MSU students) throughout the year. Activities are funded through the purchase of upgraded linens and carpets for your room.

Spartan Bookstore

MSU Computer Store: Help and Repair

Visit www.cstore.msu.edu to shop for all your techy needs, view store hours or schedule a repair appointment.
