New Student Room Selection Instructions

Congratulations on being accepted to Michigan State University! Each first-year student that signs a Housing Contract on or before May 1, 2017 can choose to select a room online. These students will receive an email to their MSU Spartan Mail with their designated time for room selection. View the charts below for more information on how you can select your room and roommate for the 2017-2018 academic year.

  2. Follow the on-screen instructions. Skip the option to “pull in” a roommate.

Room Selection with a Roommate

Use the table below to determine if you can select a room and roommate(s).

Housing Contract Date

Method for selecting a roommate

Both roommates signed on or before May 1, 2017

You can use the instructions below.

Roommate 1: Signed on or before May 1, 2017
Roommate 2: Signed by the time roommate 1 selects a room and pulls in roommate 2.

Roommate 1 can pull in the Roommate 2 AFTER the Roommate 2 signs the contract.

Both roommates signed after May 1, 2017

Roommate selection is unavailable.

  1. Decide which roommate will select the room. Only one of the roommates needs to select the room. Usually the roommate with the earlier time slot is the preferred choice.
  2. The roommate who will select the room needs the Roommate Code of all other roommate(s). You may want to create a Roommate Code that you can all use together. See the instructions on how to create or edit your Roommate Code for help.
  3. All roommates need to share their meal plan choice with thee roommate who will select the room.
  4. It is easiest to add roommates using their MSU Net IDs. Gather all MSU Net IDs prior to sign-up. The beginning of your Spartan Email before the @ is the MSU Net ID.
  5. Those who will be completing the room selection will pick a space and pull in roommate(s) during or after their designated time. You can pull in up to three roommates. You will only see available spaces that are able accommodate all roommates.
  6. After room selection, the pulled-in roommate(s) will get an email confirmation to their MSU Spartan Mail. Verify that all roommates have received this email.

Create or Edit your Roommate Code

All roommates need to set a Roommate Code in their iLiveOn accounts and share their Roommate Code with the roommate who will select the room. Think of your Roommate Code like a team name that you will only share with your roommate(s). Do not use a private password. All roommates can use the same Roommate Code. Follow the instructions below to edit your Roommate Code:

  1. Go to the LiveOn website and click the link to iLiveOn.
  2. Log-in with your MSU Net ID and password.
  3. Select the option Edit your housing profile.
  4. Scroll to the section for your Roommate Code.
  5. You can use up to ten letters and numbers for your Roommate Code. You will be sharing your Roommate Code with others, so pick something easy to share that is not a password for other accounts.

Edit your Housing Assignment Preferences

You will need to select your dining plan and optionally select a roommate during room selection. The housing preferences are to help the Housing Assignments Office assign your dining plan and roommate if you (or your roommate) are unable to select your room.

Access your housing preferences through your housing profile by following the instructions below.

  1. Go to the LiveOn website and click the link to iLiveOn.
  2. Log-in with your MSU Net ID and password.
  3. Select the option Edit your housing profile.
  4. Edit your preferences.
    1. Dining Plan Preference: Optionally designate the dining plan you would prefer to have assigned to you if you are unable to select your dining plan during room selection. Learn more about your dining plan options.
